05/15/13, Boise State University, Dept of Geosciences, Hydrologic Sciences, Jim McNamara Research Director, Pam Aishlin Site Maintenance and Data Management Data provided herein is for soil instrumentatin site HS (high elevation, south-facing) of Dry Creek Experimental Watershed, Boise, Idaho. DATA STREAM: 1. Four pits were emplaced by graduate student Toni Smith, Boise State University in 2007. Data collection initiated April 12, 2008. 2. Data collection and site maintenance is provided by Boise State University Hydrologic Sciences. 3. Data files collected via Campbell Scientific datalogger are quality checked and post processed for gapfilling, noise filtering and/or corrected according to established instrument calibrations. SITE NOTES: Soil moisture and soil temperature measurement site. Site includes four soil pits with sensors at multiple depths, 2, 15, 30 cm and near bedrock. Pits are located at 3 m quadrilateral separation. Bedrock sensor depths for pits 1-4, accordingly, are 48,52,57,57, though bedrock depth is indicated as 65,70,80 and 77 cm, accordingly. This site is south-facing, located in the Shingle Creek catchment of DCEW. It is one of 8 soil sites established as north-south facing paired sites in 2007, 2008. Geology at this location is Sandy loam over fractured granodiorite. Site is forested and moderately steep. DATA/INSTRUMENT NOTES: Sensors initially installed are Decagon ECH2O EC-TM soil moisture and soil temperature sensors. Sensor precision is 0.001 for volumetric water content (cm3/mc3) and 0.1 celsius for soil temperature. Sensors were calibrated in-lab at Boise State University by Toni Smith, in cooperation with Decagon technical support, in accordance with manual specifications and expected sandy loam soil. An appropriate datalogger program was written by Toni Smith in collaboration with Decagon technical support. An ultrasonic snow depth sensor was installed fall 2012. Additional pits were installed, one upslope sensors #5-8, 2012, and one downslope sensors #1-4, 2013, of the above, using Stevens soil sensors, Hydraprobe II. Upper pit - sensor placed at 56 cm, yet dug to 70 cm and cored vertically in bottom of whole, to 80 cm; pit wall was too solid to emplace sensor below 56 cm. This data is available upon request. Stevens soil sensor data is primarily collected as basic data. Algorithms are used to remove obviously erroneous values, such as negative moisture values and temperature above expected range of -10 to 40 celsius, as well as obviously 'stuck' values. In some years, these algorithms were not applied in order to preserve trends such as occur with soil moisture into the negative range due to sensor calibration offset. ANNUAL ERRORS/GAPS/UPDATES: Data collection initiated April 12, 2008, initially 10 minute data intervals. 2012 - There remain many unworking sensors. Gaps 3/21-3/31, 4/21 - 5/1 2012, 10/9-10/20. changed to 15 min data 10/5/12 (prior 10 min data), and usd installed. 11/16/12 installing new stevens soil moi sensors, 112812 replaced 800 w/ cr1000. For now only employing upper pit of stevens sensors;15 min data initially. Gap in Stevens due to failure w/ SDI 11/16 - 11/26/12, minor gap 11/28 15:15 program change. 112812 replaced 800 w/ cr1000 2013 - 15min data ends 3/16/13, hourly data begins. 15 min data available upon request. 2014 - Gap all 12/17/14 - 1/14/15 low battery. 2015 - Collection gaps 3/6 - 4/1 record #'s indicate records did exisit; gap 5/29-7/12 record #'s indicate records did exist, both gaps verified not on logger. Stevens minor gap on 7/19/15. Gaps late Dec to 1/8/2016 due to low power. 2016 - Gaps to 1/8/2016 due to low power; gaps July, lost data. Only two partial working original sensors, pit 2 30cm and pit 3 2cm. Stevens sensors in upper and lower pits provide data, though with same July gap. Steven sensors fail at the end of Aug, possibly due to lower limit of measurement, values improved in the fall. Data gap 9/29-10/11, low power. Stevens sensors appear to fail, exibit "stuck" values during the dry season 2016. This occurred minimally in 2015. In 2017, this began to occur sporadically in April and continued through the year. 2017 - gaps occur jan-feb, low bat. Negative soil moisture values are erroneous, however, retained in here to show trends. Additional sensors are functional, though noisy, including pit 2 bedrock, pit 3 15 cm, pit 3 bedrock.
